Flow and volumes are computed from the SNI 2398:2017 rules (volumes divided by 1000 to convert L to m³). The result is compared against the standard size table (3-year desludging), and the recommended volume is the larger of the two — the conservative choice for screening.

A mixed-system tank for 5 people, water use 150 L/person/day, 70% becoming wastewater, 2-day detention, 35 L/person/year sludge, 3-year desludging.

QA = 150 × 0.7 × 5 = 525 L/day. Settling VA = 525 × 2 / 1000 = 1.05 m³. Sludge VL = 35 × 5 × 3 / 1000 = 0.53 m³. Calculated total = 1.58 m³.

The SNI table for 5 users gives a standard 2.1 m³ tank (1.6 × 0.8 × 1.6 m). The recommended volume is the larger: 2.1 m³.

Using supply flow as wastewater flow. Not all the water supplied ends up as wastewater into the tank — some is consumed, evaporated, or used outdoors. The fraction (commonly 60–80%) matters; using the full supply oversizes the tank.

Forgetting the sludge volume. The tank is not just a settling chamber — it stores accumulated sludge between cleanings. Sizing only on detention time leaves no room for sludge, so the tank fills and effluent quality collapses well before the next desludge.

Picking the wrong system table. Mixed and separate systems have different flows and different standard tables. A blackwater-only tank is much smaller than a combined one for the same population; mixing them up mis-sizes the unit.

Skipping desludging. The sizing assumes the tank is emptied on schedule. Neglect it and sludge crowds out the settling volume — the most common reason septic tanks underperform in service.

Pushing past the standard scope. SNI 2398 stops around 50 persons. Beyond that a septic tank alone is not enough, and the design must move to a packaged STP with proper biological treatment.

Add a settling volume (daily flow × detention time) to a sludge volume (per-person sludge × users × desludging period). Compare with the SNI size table and take the larger.

How long wastewater is held so solids settle and partly digest. SNI uses 2–3 days; longer gives better settling but a bigger tank.

Mixed takes all wastewater (grey + black), sized from total water use; separate takes only blackwater, sized from a smaller per-person flow. They use different size tables.

Every 2–5 years, with the standard table built on 3. Longer periods need more sludge storage and a bigger tank, and the tank must actually be emptied on schedule.

No — SNI 2398 covers up to about 50 persons. Larger populations need a packaged STP or full treatment plant, beyond this screening tool.

A septic tank is the simplest piece of wastewater treatment there is, and one of the most misunderstood. It is not a holding pit and not a treatment plant — it is a quiet chamber that lets solids settle to the bottom, grease rise to the top, and partly clarified water pass on to a soakaway or further treatment. Size it right and it works for years with only periodic emptying. Size it wrong and it either overflows with raw sewage or silts up and stops treating anything.
